Rock band Nephew opens Hopenhagen Live
Danish rockers open the two-week Hopenhagen Live series of events coinciding with UN officials starting their Seal the Deal campaign
After the big globe on the City Hall Square was lit and a jazz concert by Marilyn Mazur, Ibrahim Electric, Alex Riel and Anisette warmed up the crowd, Danish rock band Nephew officially kicked off Hopenhagen Live with an exclusive concert. In the square, some 10,000 people could also see Copenhagen’s mayor Ritt Bjerregaard making a speech along with UN envoy Gro Harlem Brundtland.
In her speech, Bjerregaard told the crowds that Hopenhagen Live is not just a local event, a global one. She stressed the importance for Copenhageners to show their engagement with climate change and the global call for action.
One of Hopenhagen Live’s aims is to keep citizens involved with the outcome of the COP15, and it is hosted by the Copenhagen City Council.
City Hall spokesperson, Marie Scott Poulsen explains that this is not like a publicity stunt. “Hopenhagen Live is a way for Copenhageners to show that they are actually a part of the climate summit. An event like this will not be happening in Denmark in the coming years.”

Scott Poulsen also pointed out that Hopenhagen Live and the of Mayors’ Climate Summit, starting next week, are ways to show that the city is active in fighting climate change. “Cities emit the most CO2, so we have to show we are willing to change,” she said.
But City Hall Square does not only host Hopenhagen Live, at midday, UN officials launched their Seal the Deal Campaign. At this UN-hosted campaign UN officials answered people’s personal questions regarding the COP15 climate conference in green-lit buildings that were set up at on the square.
The main objective of the campaign is to encourage people all over the world to sign an on-line petition stating that world leaders should negotiate a fair and effective climate deal. The petition will be presented to world leaders when they come to Copenhagen on the last day of the summit.
Hopenhagen Live and Seal the Deal will be taking place over the next two weeks. For more information visit www.hopenhagenlive.dk and www.sealthedeal2009.org.
