Cash boost for tropical forests
More than a 13 million euros paid out in first installment of Danish forestry support funds
Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in December, the Danish government is pumping some 14 million euros into protecting at-risk tropical forests around the world.
Development Cooperation Minister Ulla Tørnæs said the funds were sources from this year’s budget and would be administered by the World Bank’s Climate Investment Funds and the UN’s REDD deforestation programme.
The money will be used to inform residents in forested areas of the economic advantages of getting an international forestry deal in place at COP15 to prevent deforestation.
Australia, Norway and the UK have already pledged 137 million euros to the World Bank’s Forest Investment Programme, and part of the latest donation is the first instalment of Denmark’s 17.5 million euros promised to the programme.
Geert Aalgaard, head of the environment department at the Foreign Ministry, told The COP15 Post that through the initiatives to which Denmark has made donations, countries like Bangladesh, Zambia, Bolivia and Mozambique will especially benefit.
