Copenhageners spell out key number
People brave the wind and rain to create giant 350 as part of a world wide day of action
Hundreds of people braved the wind and rain last Saturday in City Hall Square to form a giant 350 as Copenhagen’s contribution to the worldwide day of action to highlight climate change.
In around 181 countries people were doing similar things in an effort to bring attention to the pressing problems facing the planet and to urge decision makers to make a strong agreement at the climate change summit in Copenhagen in December.
Organised by the movement and website 350.org, activists across the globe were inventive in displaying the number 350 – the number of CO2 molecules per million that climate scientists estimate as the upper limit to prevent catastrophic runaway climate change.
While people stood soggily in City Hall Square, activists unfurled a banner atop Mount Everest, draped messages across Egyptian pyramids, arranged themselves atop Aztec temples and held underwater parties on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in what was thought to be the most widespread demonstration ever undertaken.
